Nowadays internet has become a big part of our life, we use it for work, email, research, banking, purchases and so on. But how many times it happens we are away for some race, event or ride and we can’t find anywhere to connect? Personally I’ve been in this situation many times stressing out because i couldn’t send some important email or couldn’t use apps on my iPhone because of big roaming costs.
To overcome this problem i bought the Huawei E5331 Internet WiFi Hotspot from Amazon for € 74 and decided to make this little review since not only i found this device very useful but it could also be a perfect solution for you when traveling. Most of the times these devices are offered inside mobile phone plans but usually the device is blocked and can be used only with a specific operator. The Huawei E5331 works with any sim card from any operator in any country.
The box in which it comes is extremely small and it contains: a wall charger, usb cable, the device, a battery and the user manuals.
On the market there are plenty of Internet WiFi Hotspots that have even faster reaching 42.2 Mbps or 4G LTE download speeds but based on my experience 21.1 Mbps is enough because here in Italy and many other places the speed hardly reaches 21.1 Mbps. The weight of the device is only 82 grams with dimensions (L-W-H) 9.3 cm x 6 cm x 1.3 cm making it extremely portable and fitting in any pocket.
The way i use it is simple, i bring the Huawei E5331 with me to any country i travel to and as soon as i arrive i search for a local mobile phone operator shop to buy a sim card (usually has a cost that ranges from 5$ to 10$) and get a prepaid internet plan of at least 1-2 Gb/Month. In this way wherever i am i can access internet from all my devices and for example check online race results, send emails, send photos and so on spending little money and without the need of finding WiFi locations. On average 20€ is the final cost to have internet access during your entire trip or vacation which is not much considering some hotels where you pay internet access even 5€ per hour. If you plan on coming to Italy and want to avoid having to look for WiFi or big roaming costs, at the moment the solutions you have are these (if you have any questions leave a comment at the end of the post):
2 Gb | 12 € / 1 month
5 Gb | 20 € / 1 month
10 Gb | 25 € / 1 month
1 Gb | 9 € / 1 month
3 Gb | 15 € / 1 month
10 Gb | 20 € / 1 month
5 Gb | 20 € / 1 month
7 Gb | 25 € / 1 month
15 Gb | 35 € / 1 month
The Huawei E5331 is extremely easy to use, you just have to insert a normal size sim card with an internet plan, insert the battery and press the on button to be ready to surf the web so its a plug&play solution. You can connect up to 8 different devices to the hotspot via WiFi (example: Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet etc) with its battery lasting about 5 hours. It also has some Led indicators on the front that show information on the battery, WiFi connection, Signal and Sms received. In conclusion this is an easy portable and inexpensive solution to have internet always with you.
